REVERE - A half-century ago, a couple of guys named Ray Carey and
Frank McCarthy decided to open a roast beef joint on Revere Beach.
It was 1951. The era of malts, burgers, and fries served at car
hops like Woo Woo Ginsburg's on Route 1 in Saugus.
A roast beef sandwich, piled high on a toasted bun, was a novelty.
So was the name they chose for their semicircular stand on Revere
Beach: Kelly's Roast Beef. [CORRECTION - DATE: Sunday, October 7,
2001:Correction: Because of a reporting error, the name of a
1950s Route 1 car hop was misidentified in the Sept. 30 North Weekly.
The correct name was Adventure Car Hop.)
Neither Carey nor McCarthy thought their Irish surnames had the
right ring to ...
