ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Afghanistan's ruling Taliban said yesterday
that they have hidden Osama bin Laden "for his safety," presumably
for protection from a possible United States commando raid. That
statement, in sharp contrast to the previous Taliban assertion that
they could not locate the suspected terrorist, was met with
skepticism in Washington, and senior US officials reiterated the
demand that the Taliban hand him over immediately.
But in an apparent shift of stance, the Afghan ambassador to
Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, also indicated that the Taliban
expect bin Laden will voluntarily depart the country.
