YOUR SON HAS BEEN SNIFFLING, COUGHING, EVEN WHEEZING. HIS EYES ARE
ITCHY, HIS NOSE RUNNY.ES ARE ITCHY, HIS NOSE RUNNY. A trip to the
doctor bolsters your suspicions. Your child may have allergies, and
they might be caused by irritants found in your own home: dust mites,
mold, mildew, pet dander, and pollen.
But wait. Before you rip posters off the wall, yank out the wall-
to-wall carpet, and send Fido to Aunt Ellen's, have your child tested
by an allergist.
"Just because your child is allergic to trees and grass doesn't
mean he's allergic to dust mites," says Melody Mancinelli, an asthma
and allergy nurse at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
