MEDFORD - Michael Bloomberg says that his victory last week in New
York's mayoral race has earned him his first elected position. That's
not quite true. In 1960, he served as president of the Slide Rule
Club at Medford High School. In the yearbook, the club is described
like this: "Under the tutelage of Mr. Appiani, a group of students,
studying higher mathematics, have been learning the proper use of the
slide rule."
Going from president of the Slide Rule Club at Medford High to
mayor-elect of New York City took Bloomberg 40 years - and millions
of dollars. A political newcomer who switched party affiliations last
year to run as a Republican, Bloomberg, 59, spent $50 million of his
