Article: 22 Soldiers at Fort Bragg Tied to Extremist Groups; Probe Follows Racist Murders of 2 Civilians

Twenty-two Army soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division have "active, passive or former links" to so-called skinhead or extremist groups, officials at Fort Bragg, N.C., said yesterday.

The division investigated extremist activities on the base after three of its soldiers were charged early this month with the racist murders of two black civilians walking down a street in nearby Fayetteville early on Dec. 7.

One of those charged, Pfc. James Burmeister II, 20, had been given oral and written counseling in the past for extremist activities and had his security clearance revoked. Soldiers who lived in a barracks with Burmeister said he had displayed a Nazi flag there.
