"Representational violence," says 37-year-old Mexican auteur
Guillermo del Toro, "as long as it's ritualized, it's ultimately a
highly spiritual experience for the audience. And it purges something
that nothing else purges, and this is true from the most ancient
times."
No director seems more attuned to the cathartic qualities of
horror than del Toro, a native of
Guadalajara, whose intriguing new film, "The Devil's Backbone,"
opens Friday. As a director, producer, screenwriter, author, and
connoisseur of special effects and makeup, he has been involved in
