NEWTON - Newton North sophomore Maida Ives has played football for
most of her life. Of course, the game that most of the world knows as
football is known to us Yankees as soccer.
This year, Ives decided to give traditional American football a
try. She is playing wide receiver and defensive back for Newton
North's junior varsity team.
"Soccer had kind of lost its luster for me," said Ives. "I wanted
to try something new, and football seemed like it would be more hard-
core. I wanted something with a lot of intensity. I was pretty good
at playing football when we'd have games in the backyard and stuff,
so I thought I'd give it a try."
