Article: Bosnian Serbs Demand New Deal for Sarajevo

Bosnian Serb leaders sought today to delay the reunification of Sarajevo under Muslim rule by more than six months and suggested that their initial compliance with the Bosnian peace plan could sour if the demand is refused.

U.S. Navy Adm. Leighton W. Smith, commander of the NATO peace force in Bosnia, said he was noncommittal after hearing the Bosnian Serbs' proposal during a meeting here in Pale, the Bosnian Serb headquarters 10 miles east of Sarajevo. But he specified that he has authority to modify deadlines set down in the Dayton peace accords, which cover a variety of steps ranging from troop pullbacks to elections.
