Banks of brightly colored slot machines. A 200-seat "race book,"
each with a desk and small TV. Oak-paneled walls and antique-brass
lamp fixtures. It isn't a new casino in Atlantic City, but an old
racetrack in Delaware.
After 58 years, Delaware Park is about to give bettors something
other than horses to play. At 8 a.m. Friday, hours before the first
horse race is shown, people will be able to ride an escalator to the
second-floor grandstand and choose from 715 slot machines that take
bets from 25 cents to $5.
Dover Downs also will begin slot-machine play on Friday, and
Harrington Raceway, not far from there, plans to follow next year. At
Delaware Park, the slots will sing from 8 a.m. to 2 ...
