Southern Scapegoat
Richard Harwood has taken South-bashing to a new extreme {"300
Years of Violence," op-ed, Dec. 20}. No longer content to blame the
South for all its intrinsic problems, he now believes that the
present plague of inner-city violence is an import from that region.
He conveniently neglects two facts: First, the decay of the
rule of law and the desire to coddle criminals were largely directed
by a liberal, mostly northern judiciary in the past 50 years.
Second, the southern familiarity with firearms actually contributes
to community safety. The knowledge that your neighbor is probably
armed is a powerful deterrent to crime, and one that should not be
