Amidst the political upheaval in Israel today the bookstore is
both a forum for political vision and debate, and a haven from the
turmoil. The streets ring with protests and even in the refuge of
the home, TV news analyses crowd in. Only in the Israeli book world,
not yet as commercially programmed as that of the U.S., can this
highly literate population pursue its broad concerns.
In the realm of politics, Shimon Peres's The New Middle East
has provoked strong reactions. A Jerusalem book salesman reports
that people have shouted at him, "Where's the new Middle East he
promises?" Assistant Foreign Minister Yossi Beilin, who engineered
