NEW ORLEANS - Mardi Gras is so central to this city's identity and
psyche that the show went on last year, even in the wake of Hurricane
Katrina's devastation. This year, 54 parades are scheduled for the
Mardi Gras season that ends Feb. 20, according to the New Orleans
Police Department.
To help people from less colorful corners of the country
appreciate just how much Carnival means to the city, two institutions
here are devoted entirely to the festivities. Just don't try to visit
on Fat Tuesday - they are closed for the holiday.
