PARIS - It was at a function in New York's Royalton Hotel in the early 1990s that Christian Lacroix first saw his followers stray. Lacroix had sailed through the 1980s as couture's savior, the prince of the pouf skirt, and a champion of color and embroidered detail. But his American supporters - the ladies who lunch - proved to be a fickle fan base.

"These ladies arrived at the Royalton without jewels, wearing gray suits and white shirts," Lacroix recalls. "I thought `What's this? Are they in mourning?' This was a totally different behavior. These were the same ladies who wore couture and jewels not long before. But everything changed."
