In the 1940s, '50s, and '60s, Kenneth Anger wasn't simply seeing
the future, he was the future. His films were the music videos of
their time, connecting the surrealists to the French New Wave to the
birth of MTV and proclaiming the artistic possibility of a do-it-
yourself aesthetic.
Along with Stan Brakhage and Bruce Conner, Anger (who turned 80
yesterday) is one of the most important experimental filmmakers. Now
he's finally got a worthy DVD collection, with his own director's
commentary. The first volume of "The Films of Kenneth Anger" includes
five of his nine mini-magnum opuses on one disc; presumably, volume
