Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the right-wing Russian extremist who has
threatened war with Germany and Japan and insulted a growing list of
world leaders, heaped sarcasm on President Clinton today, saying the
president is "afraid" to meet with him in Moscow next week.
"The American president - big deal," the Russian news agency
Interfax quoted Zhirinovsky as saying. "Shame on this president.
Let him stay at home and play his saxophone over there rather than
come here and meet with God knows who."
Zhirinovsky's remarks came just 24 hours after the Russian
nationalist said he wanted to cooperate more with the West. The
unusually personal comments were his first public attack on Clinton.
