WOODSTOCK, Vt. - By the time we got to Woodstock, we were full of
cheese.
Maybe that's not as poetic as the trip Joni Mitchell wrote about
in 1969, but since Yasgur's farm and that other Woodstock are a long
way from the maple-and-dairy gantlet that leads to Vermont's Village
Inn of Woodstock, my husband and I were feeling pretty satisfied with
the way our weekend had started out.
On the journey up from Boston, we'd gone out of our way to sample
parts of the Vermont Cheese Trail, and the result was some terrific
backroads scenery, free snacking, and, as they say in "The Ten
Commandments," very much cattle. We were particularly smitten with
