SOMERVILLE - It takes a special kind of energy to hold 900 people in thrall for 75 minutes with just an acoustic guitar, piano, and voice.

Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard has that energy.

Monday night at the Somerville Theatre, Gibbard commented a few times on the hushed reverence of the crowd.
