The call from my cousin, Barry, was not unexpected.
There was a sense of relief and mellowness to his voice.
"I think I've found it," he said.
I knew right away what he was talking about. For years, I have
been troubled by the disappearance of the family recipe for potato
salad. For 25 years, our fathers, Sam and Eddy, had run a deli in
Chelsea with another brother, Murray. Since Murray & Eddy's closed in
1979, nearly everything about the place had taken on a gilded
resonance, and while the deli was known for its huge corned-beef and
hot-pastrami sandwiches, it's the potato salad that people still talk
about.
