On a trip to Rome last year, we saw beautiful tiny mosaic
tiles in many churches. I'm a do-it-yourself guy, and I'd
like to use them for the backsplash above our kitchen
counter. Are they glass or ceramic or stone, and where
do I find them?

Mosaic work has been used throughout the Mediterranean
since ancient times. The first mosaics were made of colored
pebbles. Over the centuries, stone and glass and, more
recently, ceramic-tile mosaics have decorated public buildings,
places of worship, and houses. A handsome installation
of these tiny tiles, called tesserae in Italian, can be found
at the Hi-Rise Bread Company at 208 Concord Avenue in
