Diana Ross and Kelly McGillis both play crazy women on network
TV tomorrow night, but Ross does it with a compassion that is
immensely moving and McGillis does it with a vengeance that comes
across as coldly exploitative.
"Out of Darkness," the ABC movie with Ross, at 9 on Channel 7,
is far superior to "In the Best of Families," the CBS miniseries
with McGillis, at 9 on Channel 9.
Ross's performance is shocking and heartbreaking. She plays
Paulie Cooper, a 42-year-old paranoid schizophrenic who was
hospitalized for her illness 43 times in 17 years. In the film,
written with artful economy by Barbara Turner, Cooper gets what
might be a last chance at a normal life when doctors decide to ...
