ALBERTVILLE, France -- Four years ago, Mary Docter viewed Olympus
through a marijuana haze. "The moment I got to Calgary, I hit the
town," she said. "I met a guy and got stoned three nights that week.
I saw the Olympics as a party, an escape. But did I think I had a
problem?"
Docter takes the line again today for the 3,000-meter speedskating
race, and this time she knows she has a problem. She is a recovering
alcoholic. She is a recovering drug addict. Docter looks back now
at 1988 and realizes that it was never any party. But it was an
escape.
"I think about what a dumb bitch I was then," said Docter, who is
skating in her fourth Winter Games at age 31. "I should have been
