As many of the world's top track and field athletes continue
preparations for the Mobil Invitational indoor meet Feb. 6 at George
Mason University, issues outside the realm of competition dominated
an afternoon news conference yesterday at the Fairfax facility.
Sprinter Michael Johnson, one of the most prominent American
track athletes, aired his displeasure with the sport's governing
body, USA Track and Field, which, he says, pays foreign athletes to
appear at the U.S. indoor championships but will not pay Americans.
Johnson, a two-time world champion in the 200 and 400 meters,
