Article: Native peoples hold own Rio summits

RIO DE JANEIRO -- About 10 minutes from the site of next week's Earth Summit, indigenous groups from around the world have gathered in a temporary village to stake their claim as the true voices of the earth. But the ambitious attempt to unify thousands of disparate groups has been hampered by a split over how indigenous peoples's rights can best be preserved and defended.

Organizers have tried to downplay the rift, but it has resulted in two separate indigenous conferences being held in connection with the UN Conference on Environment and Development, which runs from June 3 to 14.
