As Bill Clinton gears up for the general election campaign, his
words often echo those of his vanquished Democratic primary rivals.
His supporters view this evolution as evidence of an emerging
Democratic policy consensus and a sign of Clinton's skill at
synthesizing the best of the year's Democratic proposals. Skeptics
say, however, that Clinton's adoption of some of the themes, slogans
and policy positions of his opponents shows a compulsion to
compromise. This year, the critics say, that tactic may hurt because
voters are demanding action rather than conciliation.
