The ring, as grand as it is, is pretty gaudy. Too big for his
hand and far too ostentatious for his taste, the ring he was awarded
for qualifying for the 76th Indianapolis 500 nevertheless represents
the greatest achievement of Brian Bonner's budding auto racing
career.
So what has he done with this treasured piece of jewelry? Has he
hidden it with other family heirlooms in a safety deposit box?
"I hawked it to race at New Hampshire," quipped Bonner, the
32-year-old rookie driver from Lynnfield who will make his home-court
appearance Sunday in the New England 200. "Actually, I have it
sitting around. I still keep it in the box it came in."
