Article: Return engagement for Carpenter

Bob Carpenter yesterday left his hometown National Hockey League team to join up with his other hometown team, the Washington Capitals.

The Peabody native, who was an unrestricted free agent after 3 1/2 years with the Bruins, signed a one-year, $500,000 contract (with an option) in returning to the Capitals, for whom he skated his first 5 1/2 NHL seasons.

Carpenter, who turns 29 July 13, made the initial contact with the Capitals upon becoming a free agent June 15 and he passed a major hurdle last week when his left knee -- shattered at Montreal Dec. 8, 1990 -- got the OK from the Capitals' team physician.

Carpenter, who just completed his 11th season, missed 20 games in 1991-92 but ...
