NEW YORK
Sometimes, in what used to be called Fun City, it is hard to
concentrate on what is crucial to the republic.
The other day, for example, as good people were demonstrating
across from Madison Square Garden for democracy in Haiti, a flatbed
truck filled with scantily-clad beauties advertising "hot oil
wrestling" rolled down Eighth Avenue and piqued the interest of even
New York's stoic finest.
The previous night, delegates to the Democratic National
Convention rushed over to a corner of a Garden corridor, where a
televison crew was interviewing someone. Clinton? Gore? Kennedy?
