Local high-tech services companies, widely known for more than
15 years as the Beltway Bandits, are campaigning to ban the
nickname.
The term is no less "untrue, unkind and inaccurate than a
racial or sexist slur," said Earle Williams, former head of BDM
International Inc. of McLean and a leader of the group of companies
that has long hated the term. "We should challenge its use,"
Williams said.
That's just what the Professional Services Council, the
industry's lobbying group, has quietly been doing for several years.
It has made good headway in Congress and the Pentagon both in
banishing the term and providing a clear idea of what the industry
