Local high-tech services companies, widely known for more than 15 years as the Beltway Bandits, are campaigning to ban the nickname.

The term is no less "untrue, unkind and inaccurate than a racial or sexist slur," said Earle Williams, former head of BDM International Inc. of McLean and a leader of the group of companies that has long hated the term. "We should challenge its use," Williams said.
