MANCHESTER VILLAGE, Vt. -- For the entire three months when the venerable Equinox hotel was closed for renovations, one worker did nothing but screw down ancient floorboards so they'd stop creaking.

Some 322 storm windows were installed in the building, which had been open in winter but never really winterized. Acoustic tile ceilings, reminiscent of '50s office high-rises at their worst, were ripped out and replaced with handsome pine matchboard. Axminster carpeting in complex patterns was custom-ordered from England.
