BELLE MEAD, N.J. -- Democratic presidential candidate Bill
Clinton, striking back at Republicans for calling him the failed
governor of a small state, turned the phrase against President Bush
yesterday, calling him the "failed president of a big country."
As a group of Democratic governors held a news conference with
Clinton before a strategy session for the fall campaign, Gov. Mario
Cuomo of New York picked up the theme.
"Let me make one point about the failed governor from a small
state," Cuomo said. "I'm working very hard in New York to fail the
way Bill Clinton has in his state."
