The combined forces of the Arlington Symphony Orchestra and the
Arlington Metropolitan Chorus created a uniquely compelling
performance of Mozart's Requiem on Sunday afternoon at Bishop
O'Connell High School.
Under the solid leadership of conductor Ruben Vartanyan, this
was a Requiem to be reckoned with. There was serious intent in every
note and every nuance.
Tempos tended to be slower than today's common practice. They
harked back to an era when there was time to linger, to reflect and
to appreciate.
There was impressive solidity from the violins and violas.
Figures that are conventionally played these days in a quick and
detached manner, "off the string," were here played purposefully ...
