Article: Judge: MIT broke antitrust laws Court finds collusion with Ivy League schools on financial aid awards

A federal judge ruled yesterday that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology violated antitrust laws by colluding with Ivy League schools to determine the amount of financial aid awarded to commonly admitted students.

MIT president Charles M. Vest said the school will appeal the decision to the US Court of Appeals for the 3d Circuit in Philadelphia. If it stands, the ruling would alter the way that many colleges and universities conduct business.

"This casts quite a chilling effect in two quarters," he said. "Quite simply, it increases the uncertainty and unease of educators as they talk about broad educational policy and what policies are appropriate."
