Article: Firms settle waste suit in New Bedford

The last two companies accused of polluting New Bedford Harbor with toxic waste in the 1970s have agreed to pay $21 million to help repair the damage, ending the lawsuit over the worst PCB contamination case in US history, sources say.

Under a deal with federal and state officials to be announced today, Federal Pacific Electric and Cornell-Dubilier Electronics will help pay to burn PCB-laced harbor sediment. They also will pay into an innovative fund that will carry out environmental projects such as building fish ladders and improving public access to the harbor.
