Russia's rich hockey tradition did nothing to help the gold
medal favorite avoid its poorest performance in Olympic history
yesterday.
Finland routed the top-seeded but inexperienced Russians 5-0,
the worst Olympic loss and first Olympic shutout suffered by the
team that formerly won fame and glory as the Soviet Union and
Unified Team.
In other action at Hakon Hall, the Czech Republic beat Austria,
7-3, and Germany defeated Norway, 2-1.
Finland (2-0) has emerged as the class of the six-team Pool A.
Still, there is little chance the Russians (1-1) won't survive their
five-game preliminary round to reach the single-elimination
quarterfinals of the 12-team tournament.
