Mere weeks into her tenure as caretaker of America's best-loved
crusty uncle, the New Yorker magazine, Tina Brown is facing
accusations of misuse of power. In a strongly worded letter to
Brown, British espionage writer John le Carre attacks the editor's
"partisan journalism" for using her new magazine "to strike a blow in
defence of" her husband, Random House editor Harold Evans. In her
response, Brown calls the charge "extraordinarily sexist."
Like most byzantine literary battles, this one has its share of
