TAMPA, Fla. -- With President Bush's advisers conceding privately
that he shows no sign of momentum and with Ross Perot also stalled in
public opinion polls, Gov. Bill Clinton worked yesterday to checkmate
Bush, campaigning to build Democratic numbers in four states that
Bush must win to cling to any chance of reelection.
Senior strategists in the Clinton campaign are not yet willing to
claim publicly that victory is at hand, but they say the Arkansas
governor currently enjoys a "solid situation" in 22 states and the
District of Columbia that would give him 284 electoral votes, if his
margins hold until Tuesday. A total of 270 electoral votes are
necessary to win.
