Late February marks the beginning of the seed-starting season,
the time when we coax to life the cool-weather lovers - broccoli,
cabbage, parsley, fennel and onions. Started now and nurtured, they
will be ready to go into the garden in mid-April.
It is still too soon to begin tomatoes, peppers, basil and many
annual flowers, which prefer warm soil and plenty of sun.
The obvious question is why start seeds indoors before the
garden season is launched? The prosaic gardener will offer strictly
practical reasons; the poetic one might talk about inner
contentment.
Many gardeners ignore both considerations, wait until April and
