MANCHESTER -- As part of the preparations for Stephen E. Merrill's
first press conference as governor-elect, campaign aide Signe McQuaid
looked at the lectern and the blackboard behind it containing final
election returns.
"Those numbers, that's a good visual," said McQuaid. A visual is
TV lingo for an attractive background.
After his news conference Wednesday, Merrill went off to visit two
small businesses near the Manchester airport, KRL/Bantry Components
Inc. and Unicare. And then to Hampton, where he attended the funeral
of long-time state Rep. Ednapearl Parr, his former den mother in Cub
Scouts. Photo opportunities all; it was 3 p.m. before Merrill held a
