CHAMPAGNE. Caviar. Cab Calloway. Enough etched glass and
ersatz Erte for an ocean liner, and former Reagan family chef Frank
Ruta at the helm. It can only be mooring in America - it can only be
the River Club in Georgetown.
Why it's taken Washington so long to rediscover the full-service
supper club is something of a mystery. After all, the power discos
that were networking central in the '80s have paled or failed, while
New York's Rainbow Room and its imitators have made highly
publicized comebacks. The Washington singles market, the other
unofficial network, is older and more asset-savvy than ever.
