PJ HARVEY
At: The Paradise with David J, Friday night.
As the advance word on England's art-rocking PJ Harvey had been
so overwhelming -- the next Patti Smith Group, the next Pretenders,
"the most exciting arrival from across the Atlantic since Sinead
O'Connor four years ago" (Bob Hilburn, LA Times) -- we can only offer
a shrug and a caveat here: Don't believe the hype. Not fully.
There is great, and there is good-but-still-striving.
PJ Harvey, a trio fronted by tightly wound but free- spirited
singer-guitarist Polly Jean Harvey, ranks in the latter category.
PJ Harvey, which played to a near-soldout crowd at the Paradise on
