This city of symbols and images, where everyone is on constant
Metaphor Alert, served up a couple of beauties this week.
On Monday afternoon, First Lady Barbara Bush -- classy and gruff
as always -- walked reporters through a December ritual, the display
of White House Christmas decorations.
She was at her best in her chosen roles: gracious hostess,
supportive spouse, press critic, self-deprecator and forceful
advocate of administration policy (in this case, intervention in
Somalia).
Hot cider was served as the conversation-tour covered the gorgeous
seasonal trimmings, the election, reporters' use of anonymous
