It was a flame that could not sustain itself for long. Ellis
Burks' advent in Boston was a symbol of a team moving toward a
different concept and style. When he replaced Dave Henderson as the
everyday center fielder in 1987, the sky was the limit.
But the flame flickered with back injuries that left Burks in the
trainer's room and away from the field the past two years. The flame
was extinguished yesterday afternoon.
After being rejected in an attempt to sign Burks to a contract
laced with incentives, the Red Sox decided that his medical problems
were too risky to tender him a contract for anywhere near the $2.3
million he earned last season.
