THAT WAS NO accident that led to admission of a 15-day-old
infant to Children's Hospital early Sunday morning. D.C. police said
the helpless newborn was put there by a grown man who reportedly
pounded his fists into her head. Now jailed and facing charges of
assault with intent to kill, the accused - a D.C. halfway house
fugitive and the child's purported father - is where he should have
been all along. That, however, is small consolation to the baby, who
might have been spared those blows had the corrections department
been doing its job.
This is one and only the latest in a series of accounts of
escapees from halfway house who later turn up in the community to
threaten the innocent. ...
