Derek Jarman was not easily slowed. Despite never getting
significant commercial backing, he directed a dozen feature films;
the lastof them, "Blue," he made when he was almost blind. In
addition to being (along with Peter Greenaway) the most inventive
and influential British art-filmmaker of his generation, he was also
a successful painter, rock video maker, stage and set designer, and
author. The third of his volumes of memoirs, "Modern Nature," was
just published in the United States; review copies came with a note
from the publisher that "Derek Jarman is available for telephone
