Article: J. Dallas Shirley Dies; D.C. Principal, Referee

J. Dallas Shirley, 80, a retired D.C. school principal and one of the area's most prominent basketball referees and supervisors, died March 1 at George Washington University. He had pulmonary fibrosis.

Over 33 years, Mr. Shirley, a Washington native, officiated more than 2,000 games. In addition to local contests, he was a National Basketball Association official during the league's first season, in 1946-47, and for the remainder of the 1940s. He also officiated at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and was chief official at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago.
