William E. Brock III, who holds one of the nation's most
impressive political re'sume's, is trying to be the first senator in
115 years to win election from two states.
And therein lie the promise and the pitfalls of his bid for the
Republican nomination to challenge three-term Maryland Democratic
Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes.
First, the promise: Brock, the millionaire heir to a candy
fortune who formally enters the race tomorrow, has precisely the
hefty credentials that recent GOP nominees from Maryland have
lacked. He's a former U.S. House member, senator, national party
chairman, U.S. trade representative and secretary of labor.
