It came over on the radio news last Sunday morning that Jersey
Joe Walcott had died at the age of 80, and for a certain sports
writer there was immediate recall of something he wrote back in
1947. It went like this:
"NEW YORK, Dec. 5 - They staged the great Madison Square Garden
holdup tonight when they held up the arm of Joe Louis and declared
him winner over Joe Walcott at the end of 15 rounds. It was
first-degree robbery."
The man who was denied the world heavyweight title that night
after twice putting Joe Louis on the floor also missed the brass
ring that would guarantee many more times on the welfare rolls for
Joe Walcott and his six children. Daddy would need to keep fighting ...
