Martin Marietta Corp.'s raid on Grumman Corp. involves the kind
of tactics that H. Norman Schwarzkopf would have used if he had been
in the business of attacking companies rather than armies.
Like Schwartzkopf attacking the Iraqis, Martin Marietta is
employing a combination of lightning speed and overwhelming
financial firepower in the hope that it can gobble up Grumman at its
price before potential rivals, such as Northrop Corp., can mount
their own bids.
Martin Marietta is striving for speed by starting a cash tender
offer to Grumman stockholders today. If successful, that would give
