Article: Landfill gas plan powers future free of pollution

A national plan to recover and make use of urban landfill gas is being implemented as the fight against the causes of the global warming gathers pace.

There are nearly 1,000 landfill sites in China's big and medium- sized cities, according to Luo Gaolai, vice-director of the office for foreign economic and trade co-operation under the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).

About 90 per cent of the waste in landfill sites is simply piled up and this causes serious pollution to soil and underground water supplies.

In addition, landfill gas is mainly composed of methane, one of the major types of gas that cause global warming.
