Declaring himself a "Marylander by choice," former senator from
Tennessee William E. Brock III announced his candidacy yesterday for
the seat held by three-term Democratic Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes.
Brock, an heir to a candy fortune and a former national GOP
chairman and labor secretary, is seen by some Maryland Republicans
as their best hope for a Senate victory in more than a decade. At
his campaign kickoff in Bethesda, he spoke only three sentences
before addressing his non-Maryland origins, an issue that dogged the
state's last three GOP Senate nominees.
"It is true that I was not born here," Brock told about 200
supporters at Strathmore Hall. "But I'm a Marylander by choice."
